Experiment 1: In the first and second tasks, adults (100%), 7-year-olds (94%) and, to a lesser extent, 4-year-olds (84%), almost exclusively named the puppet’s drawings according to resemblance. In the final task, adults and 7-year-olds named the traced drawing according to the image beneath the tracing paper – causality, not intention. Four-year-olds performed at chance, 47% named the drawing according to intention. Experiment 2: In the intention-resemblance task, 80% of 7-year-olds and 75% of adults named the drawings according to intention. In the devalued intention-resemblance task, adults and 7-year-olds performed at chance.

Experiment 1: In the first task, children were introduced to a puppet who stated he was going to draw a particular entity (e.g. bear), but in fact drew a completely different entity (e.g. rabbit). Participants were asked to identify the pictures. In the second task information was included about the puppet’s lack of knowledge about, for instance, the difference between bears and rabbits. In the final task, the puppet stated his intention to trace a picture of a cow, before accidentally tracing a picture of a horse. The test question remained the same as before. Experiment 2: The intention-resemblance task and devalued intention-resemblance tasks from Experiment 1 were repeated, this time using a picture that was ambiguous in resemblance – it could represent the entity the puppet stated he was going to draw or something else.
